FRIENDSHIP FARM
RAINIER, OREGON

Friendship Farm is an adventure started in l995 by Terry and Dinah Faw and Dale Toms, Dinah’s father. Looking for a place to “retire” the three purchased the farm, located a few miles uphill from the Columbia River in the Goble area of Rainier, Oregon. Knowing very little about country-ways or farming, they spent the first rainy winter researching options for the land, redesigning the wind-fallen orchard and rebuilding the slanted farmhouse and falling down barn.
After much discussion, and with high hopes, the three converted it to a specialty blueberry and lingonberry farm…two fruits that are fairly unique, didn’t need to be replanted often, and that they all liked in case no one ever bought any! The plants flourished and the three picked their crops and sold them as fresh berries at local Farmers’ Markets and Holiday Bazaars.
With a mutual interest in cooking, Dinah and Terry made jams and syrups for friends and family…they liked it enough to spark the couple’s interest in creating these product for paying customers. Dinah’s father, Dale, as a Diabetic, has special dietary needs, which provided the motivation for them to create really good sugar-free products. After many taste-tests and much research, the Splenda-sweetened products came to be.
Much to the delight of Dinah, Terry and Dale, the Friendship Farm products have been well received. Customers buy one jar, and come back the next week for several more. They tell their friends…they give the jams and syrups as gifts…they contribute recipes to the Friendship Farm collection. Restaurants and specialty stores have requested the product for their use or re-sale. Although such interest is gratifying, Dinah, Terry and Dale have chosen to offer their specialty products directly to the public and through a select group of retail distributors…to them the best part of farming is the friendships you cultivate.
